Today I was following a student driver. This child with an instructor in the passenger seat was doing 5 UNDER the speed limit and not even doing to consistently. Child (gender fee pronoun) would occasionally bump up to 55 or even 60, then hit the brakes back down to 50.

Kinja'd!!!

There are a few problems with this. For staters I know the woman who owns this driver’s Ed school. She is a very quiet, overly cautious, timid middle aged woman. The kind of driver who will probably piss me off at a round about, and she is teaching a generation of children to drive at or below the speed limit. That’s a problem in the real world.

Also cruise control is standard in almost every car now. It was invented to for convenience but for safety, smooth flowing traffic, as well as higher fuel efficiency. But apparently she is not teaching kids to use it.

I passed this student driver a a few minutes later I looked back and there was a line of probably 10 angery drivers now suck behind this irregular slow poke, probably getting angery.

It really makes me want to open a driving school. One that encourages confidence, while teaching skills to back it, because just teaching kid to be timid driver’s isn’t going to help.

Im22, so i remember when i was first learning to drive.

A) of course they teach you to go the limit or lower. S peeding is illegal as oppo sometimes forgets. Theyre not going to teach you to drive illegally, because you wont pass your drivers test if youre speeding.

B) Its hard to maintain your speed when you’re a new driver. You may do it automatically, but its a skill you need to learn. It took me about 6 months to be able to maintain a speed without always looking at my speedo.

That’s why I brought up the point about using cruise control. Get up to 55 and stay there

And regardless of legality driving 5 under is much more dangerous than driving 5 over

Also cruise control... apparently she is not teach ing kids to use it.

Actually, I’m okay with this. Cruise control shouldn’t be used as “training wheels”. New drivers need to learn throttle control.

Then do it on a side road, not a main heighway during a busy hour

I’m very against bumper stickers.  Very against.  But I might get one that says "Cruise Control.  Use It."

My instructor loved me because I wasn’t timid, and merged at highway speed instead of waiting ten minutes for a massive gap.

My driving school was also shut down for hiring felons, so.....

I feel ya, but u nfortunately, fine  throttle control isn’t something you learn in just a handful of 10-minute side road sessions. It takes a lot more practice than that. You have to get a feel for what it takes to maintain speed, in more varied environments than just 25-35mph side streets. Besides, new drivers shouldn’t be depending on convenience or safety features when they’re learning the basics.

Hmm, two things.

1. Using cruise control in the city isn’t a good idea, most drivers handbooks advise against it

Cruise control

On a long trip you can use the cruise control, if your vehicle is so equipped, to keep your speed constant. Cruise control will save gas and make highway driving less demanding. However, there are times when you should not use cruise control, such as in urban areas, on wet or slippery roads, in traffic where the speed is highly variable or in any situation where your vision is restricted.(From SGI, wording would of course change depending on which handbook your using)

2. How much experience do yo u have instructing learner drivers, because it’s very exhausting and stressful . I couldn’t see myself doing that as a job.

I think you would be a good personality match. However, I think finding an underwriter who will sign off on a Swedish/Finnish driving curriculum for minors will be your unconquerable obstacle in the current legal climate. The law would rather pass insurance related legislature than allow the populace reasonable accommodation to prepare itself for Winter conditions.

My driving instructor made me drive at or below the 55mph speed limit on I-95 through Philadelphia at rush hour. If I went above 55, he hit his brake to slow the car down. It was terrifying.

Cruise control doesnt help teach you the skill of maintaining your speed. Sorry someone learning to drive is so inconvenient to you.
